Description:

Visit the nuclear attack-proof fortress in Stevns Klint, and hear the story about one of Denmark's most secret places, which was located at the utmost frontline during the Cold War.

Stevnsfort was a secret part of the defense of Denmark and NATO. The peninsula of Stevns would have been on the absolute frontline if war had broken out between the East and the West. This is why Stevnsfort was built, and for 40 years, the staff here was ready for war around the clock.

Today, you can experience the nuclear attack-proof fortress as it appeared when war loomed closest during the 1980s. Today the fortress is listed as a national monument on Denmark during the Cold War, and the museum deals with not only the history of the fortress, but also with Danish/NATO relations in the common defense and preparedness during the period. Today the unique authentic setting of the fortress makes a visit on one of the daily guided tours highly worthwhile.

Cold War Interests:

The Stevnsfort is visited by approximately 40,000 guests every year who attend one of the almost 1,700 guided tours.

Furthermore, each year about 140 schools visit the museum and participate in the educational programs. Guests are welcomed by a staff of 42 employees, including historians, teachers and specially trained guides. The museum has an annual turnover of about € 800,000. Another important goal of the museum is the authentic preservation of the site; two artisans are working together with some 50 volunteers to keep the complicated installation, with its many buildings, in service. The museum is also a Documentation and Research Centre with two tenured researchers who participate in national and international research programs. The museum has recently done an extensive documentation, presentation and evaluation of all 1,831 military installations of the Cold War in Denmark for the Danish Ministry of Cultural Heritage. This was carried out and published this between 2012 to 2015.
